Congratulations NIHCC!

I just got the submission report for Nature Visions 2016. NIHCC had 16 photographers who submitted images this year vs. 15 last year and 91 Nature images this year vs. 77 last year! I don’t have last year’s Photo Art totals but this year we submitted 25 images to Photo Art. Over all we submitted 10% of the Nature images this year vs. 7.8% last year. Thanks to everyone for participating!

The results of the competition will be announced in mid-October, so keep your fingers crossed!

Jim

Field Trip:  Raptors at Carrie Murray Nature Center

·        Saturday, October 1, 2016

10:30 AM to 2:00 PM

Carrie Murray Nature Center

1901 Ridgetop Rd., Baltimore, MD (map at https://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=1901+Ridgetop+Rd.%2C+Baltimore%2C+MD%2C+21207%2C+us)

We will meet near the entrance at 10:30

Spend the day with birds of prey!  This is an opportunity to shoot injured/orphaned wild raptors (hawks, eagles, owls, and ravens) in an outdoor setting.  This is conducted in a small group setting with professional handlers for birds (so you probably won’t get bitten).

The raptor part of the photo shoot starts at 11:00!!

The Baltimore City Department of Recreation and Parks established the Carrie Murray Nature Center in the late 1980’s after receiving a generous donation from baseball legend Eddie Murray. The Nature Center, dedicated and named in memory of Mr. Murray’s mother, is located inside the 1216 acre historic Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park.

The park is home to hawks, owls, deer, fox, raccoons, beavers, opossums, turtles, and a great array of song birds.

If you wish to carpool, we’ll meet at Giant Food at 8750 Arliss St., in Silver Spring, in parking lot at furthest point from the Giant entrance.

Depart Giant 9:30 a.m.  Arrive at Center ~10:30 a.m.

The cost for admission to the Nature Center is $15.00 for attendees with the Silver Spring Camera Club (otherwise admission would be $35.00)

See http://carriemurraynaturecenter.org for more information.

October Speaker: Nikhil Bahl

The Silver Spring Camera Club welcomes back Nikhil Bahl as its October speaker on Thursday, October 6.  Nikhil is a full-time professional photographer, author, educator, workshop instructor and environmentalist. He resides in the Washington D.C. Area.

His presentation will focus on techniques for creating dynamic images. He maintains that while a great light display can lead to attractive images, a good photographer does not rely on great light to create compelling images. From capturing energy and motion to the serene and surreal, Nikhil will talk about techniques and ideas that you can use to create dynamic images. Nikhil will also give you insights into how and when these techniques are best applied.

Drawing continuous inspiration from nature, Nikhil adopts novel approaches and seeks meaningful interpretations to create photographs that transcend the commonplace, reflect deeper insights, and convey an enchantment with the subject’s beauty. An offshoot of Nikhil’s fine art photography and love of nature is his documentation of wildlife behaviors and habitats. As a volunteer with the National Park Service and US Fish & Wildlife Service, his goal is to portray environmental stories with an artistic appeal. He uses these photographs to educate and motivate the public about the imperative of conservation.

Each year Nikhil leads numerous photography tours and instructional workshops in the United States and abroad. His teaching encourages participants to advance beyond ordinary photos and develop their own style and vision. He is a popular speaker at photography clubs, expos and industry events. He authored the acclaimed eBook Creative Interpretations. He writes articles on the creative and technical aspects of photography. His work can be viewed at http://www.nikhilbahl.com.
